"I'm Happy Being Childfree Because of How Crazy the World Is Now"
One of my favorite follows on Instagram is @choosing2Bchildfree, and I recently saw this quote shared on their account:
I'm happy being childfree because of how crazy the world is now. Full of chaos, people with dangerous motives, expensive things, stress, bill struggles, things people think they're missing out on — including people begging for grandkids when it's a personal choice, not an obligation.
The anonymous contributor touches on so many of the things we talk about here at Zero Kids Zero Regrets every day — choice, family, finances, stress, a chaotic world made ever more hostile to future generations because of politics, propaganda, biases, climate change.
The quote reminded me of something I have briefly mentioned before:
I could never get past the idea that no one consents to be born, nor wrap my head around plunging a person into this world without their having any say in the matter. Especially not when I might be dooming them to a life on a burning planet wrecked by climate change. I love my hypothetical kids so fiercely that I don’t want to subject them to a future that is uncertain, at best.
I'm happy being childfree because of how crazy the world is now, too.
Life is unrequested. Being born is nonconsensual. That is just a strange and troubling fact of existence.
The future has never been and will never be certain, but the shape of the uncertainty is, to some extent, knowable — and I don't like what I see in humanity's immediate future.
