Protecting Your Own Health Is a Valid Reason to Remain Childfree
In the wake of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which reversed abortion protections in the U.S. previously protected by Roe v. Wade, at least four women have died because of restricted access to lifesaving abortion care.
In Texas alone, the number of women who have "died while pregnant, during labor, or soon after childbirth skyrocketed following the state’s 2021 ban on abortion care," due to the overall erosion of women's reproductive healthcare as a result of the ban.
The Guttmacher Institute has documented "an increasingly robust body of evidence is emerging that illustrates the myriad harms caused and exacerbated by" the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to revoke the Constitutional right to abortion.
The overall effect of Dobbs has been to make pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period far less safe for women in the United States.
As a result, an increasing number of women are considering whether it is safe to have children at all.
When choosing to parent necessitates risking your life to do it, it makes the decision that much harder.
And, in that environment, choosing to remain childfree to protect your own health is not merely a valid choice, but arguably the only truly safe one you can make.
