Russia Proposes Law Against Being Childfree by Choice
NBC News reports that Russian lawmakers have proposed legislation that would ban "propaganda of conscious refusal to bear children."
The bill would tackle what Volodin said was the promotion of the “ideology of childlessness” and the “childfree movement” on the internet, in the media, in movies and even in advertisements, citing what he said where frequent online displays of “disrespect for motherhood and fatherhood, aggression toward pregnant women and children, and members of large families.”
It will come with heavy fines, he said, of up to $4,300 for individuals and more than $53,000 for legal entities. “A close-knit and large family is the basis of a strong state,” Volodin added.
[...] The Kremlin says that in contrast to the “decadent” West, it’s upholding so-called “family values.”
“A woman’s purpose is to procreate — this is an absolutely unique natural gift,” Putin said in March.
This is disgusting and infuriating. It's rank misogyny and ever more aggressive attempts to control women — our bodies and our entire lives — under the auspices of "family values."
It's no surprise that the fascist Putin continues to pursue a radical antifeminist agenda that seeks to limit reproductive freedom and pursue nationalistic coercive reproduction. It is, however, a pointed reminder that there is one party in the United States — and, increasingly, at least one party in many other Western democracies — whose leadership regards Moscow as an ally and model of social policy.
Any "family values" that don't include room for women to make their own, free and uncoerced, choices about what their families will look like aren't values worth holding.
It's more crucial than ever to have public conversations about being childfree — and the importance of policies that support that choice.
