What Is Wrong with This Guy?
"If your worldview tells you that it's bad for women to become mothers but liberating for them to work 90 hours a week in a cubicle at the New York Times or Goldman Sachs, you've been had," J.D. Vance tweeted following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Look, we don't want this to become a J.D. Vance hate site (well, if we're honest, we kinda do!), but this needs to be addressed.
First of all, it's not "liberating" for anyone to work 90 hours a week. Of course, we wouldn't expect the veep candidate of a party whose one-time president thought a woman working three jobs is "fantastic" and "uniquely American" to agree.
And I suppose we shouldn't expect Vance to understand, despite being a father of three, that being a parent is a round-the-clock job, which is more than 90 hours a week.
We see your sleight of hand, Vance. The men who want to force women to become mothers are always the ones engaging in obfuscation about how much (unpaid) work that actually entails.
It's one of many considerations that women — and men — should make when deciding whether to parent, and any politician who suggests that paid employment is somehow less dignified or makes one less free than parenting, especially as they simultaneously argue that women should eschew paid employment to raise children, is the one trying to pull a fast one on you.
Not those of us who believe every woman should have a meaningful choice.
